Assignment begins below. Please take the course of your week to complete. If it takes you longer, that is okay. Be patient with yourself as you thoughtfully think through it all.
Goal
Birds of a feather flock together. If you are in a room with 4 broke people, guess who’s the 5th? If you are the smartest in the room, you need a new room!
Do you remember hearing these growing up? How about as an adult? I’ve always hated hearing these but guess what? There is absolute truth to what is being said: WE ARE A PRODUCT OF OUR ENVIRONMENT. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have some control here. These statements are not meant to keep you stuck, but to point out obvious truths. The people that you keep around you have a direct influence on your life and your lifestyle; good, bad, or indifferent. If you hang with nerds, you’ll probably be a nerd. Not bad at all, just smart as hell. Likewise, if you hang with dummies…you get the point.
This week, take a scan of your life. What is your circles like? Assess the careers of your closest friends (internally -they don’t need to know what you’re doing) and compare if the statements are true from above. What are your conversations like? Are you talking about big money moves? Or are you gossiping all the time? Be honest. Be judgmental of yourself in this situation because the next thing is to start moving toward better things…even if it is WITH your circle.
Name 5 of your closest people and then write down career, main conversations, and if this person is an encourager or not.
Identify
Now that your friend list is done, look over the people and start to identify areas that need improvement. Are you lacking an encouraging friend? Are you missing someone who talks about BIG MONEY? You know the ones…the friends on $million dollar hunts. The one who may even be a serial entrepreneur.
This activity is not about “getting rid of” friends. It’s about putting people in their right category to achieve your lifestyle. So get real down and dirty here. If your lifestyle change is all about weight loss, you gotta know who your friends are that insist on eating unhealthy. You don’t quit that friend, you save that friend for cheat day! If your lifestyle change is about going sober, guess who you can’t be around as much?
In your journal, group your friends according to your lifestyle change.
Affirmation
“What’s better than one millionaire? TWO!”
Yeah, your friends matter. Write that down in your journal and on some sticky notes. Start talking BIG to your friends. Be the influence you need in your own life…
